Habitare Neighbours

Habitare Neighbours

In the autumn of 2024, Habitare will feature a new Habitare Neighbours theme area. Designed and curated by Ulla Koskinen and Anna Pirkola, the Neighbours area will include an exhibition and a residential block, which presents exciting companies in the industry. The area provides an opportunity to explore the diversity of homes and different ways of everyday living.

Living in the same yard, in homes of varying sizes, brings together different generations and residents in different life situations. The set of featured homes in the new Habitare Neighbours area provides an opportunity to explore the diversity of homes and different ways of everyday living.

Habitare Neighbours

The idea of the Neighbours area, featured for the first time at Habitare in 2024, is to present an image or mood of a yard area of a residential block that lives and evolves with its residents. The home is a space and a mood – a safe haven for its occupants, and a place for gatherings and encounters, but also somewhere to retreat to and spend personal time.

The Neighbours themed exhibition will present today’s design and materials, as well as topics related to homes, interior decoration and construction.

Laura Seppänen will design the next instalment of the well-received Habitare Neighbours area

“Habitare’s theme of Touch led me to reflect on Isaac Newton’s third law of motion, which can be expanded to mean ‘you cannot touch without being touched’. I believe that in our surface-driven time, many of us have a strong yearning for a connection, to touch and be touched.”

Personalities and life situations, time, and emotions

The area will provide an opportunity to explore how people’s personalities and life situations, time, and emotions are reflected in the home, what creates the mood of the home, and how the spaces within the walls are adapted for a variety of lifestyles.

The Neighbours theme exhibition

The Neighbours theme exhibition covers today’s design and materials, as well as various topics related to homes, interior decoration, and construction. The exhibition provides an opportunity to discuss how the age of residents and their life situations are reflected in homes, and whether the various layers of homes are related to age or something else. It also enables us to discuss ownership: what needs to be privately owned and what can be shared.

The residential block

The partners of Habitare Neighbours present themselves at their own stands in the residential block. The area features a common yard, at the other end of which you can find the common spaces for the residents. The yard area between the buildings is complemented by a large table that people can gather around for discussions and exchanges, workshops, and encounters. The yard area also serves as one of the Habitare fair’s mini arenas.

Theme area designed and curated by Ulla Koskinen and Anna Pirkola

“Habitare Neighbours outlines the home as a safe base that feels your own, enabling smooth and pleasant everyday living. It outlines the home as a framework for people’s lives and the neighbourhood’s common area as something that nicely complements and supports everyday life and provides security.

Ulla and Anna’s top 3 picks for Habitare Neighbors:

  • Different ways and possibilities of living: Visitors can think about different living possibilities and how a home can be adapted according to age and life situation.
  • A lot of time is spent in the kitchen, and there, together with aesthetics, functionality is important. The exhibition’s two different kitchens give visitors the opportunity to think about what kind of kitchen solutions are best for their homes.
  • Colors, materials and surface structure: We hope that visitors will get ideas and inspiration for the use of colors, materials and surface structures in their homes.
