Designed by Hans Hornemann, Rope combines classic upholstery details with flexibility, bringing comfort and character to interiors

Few pieces of furniture are asked to work harder than the sofa. With Rope, Danish designer Hans Hornemann has created one that combines flexibility, comfort and personality in equal measure.

Created for Normann Copenhagen, Rope is a modular sofa designed with adaptability in mind. Clean lines and softly rounded edges give the piece an inviting feel, while a piped seam – a classic upholstery detail -Hornemann has transformed into the collection’s signature feature.

Hornemann explains that ‘all other excess details have been removed from the design’, resulting in a sofa that feels pared back and timeless, while still embodying Normann Copenhagen’s playful spirit.

Comfort was equally central to the brief. To achieve it, Rope pairs pocket springs with generous cushioning, borrowing construction techniques more commonly associated with mattresses. The approach creates a seat that feels softer and more supportive, encouraging long afternoons of reading, working or simply unwinding.

‘In order to achieve the highest levels of comfort, we have built the sofa with pocket springs and foam,’ explains Hornemann. ‘The foam shapes itself according to the body, while the pocket springs provide support that feels more alive because you don’t sink too far in.’

Designed to adapt to a variety of interiors, Rope can be configured in numerous ways and upholstered in eight different textile options across a wide palette of colours. Whether in a compact workspace or a larger interior, the design can be configured to suit different needs, proving that flexibility need not come at the expense of personality.
